Finding your first job

Finding your first job Finding your first jobPosted June 18, 2013, by Jo Messer When youre a student looking for your very first job it can be hard to know where to start but getting a part-time job while youre at school is a great thing to do. Youll be able to earn some pocket money while developing your skills and building your experience, and youll have to learn time management to organise your time between work and study something that will come in really handy in future. Here are some tips to help you get started Prepare a resume This doesnt need to be fancy, just a straightforward Word document will suffice. You need to include your name and contact details, an objective so the employer knows what youre looking for, and list your relevant skills (computer, communication, team work), achievements/awards, and extracurricular activities such as sport or volunteer work. Employers wont be expecting a long work history, so a simple one-page document would be fine. Know where to loo k A customer service position in the retail or hospitality industry is a common first job, and theres nothing better than working in an area that youre actually interested in. Think about the types of things you like, like sport, music, art or fashion. If you love sport, then a job at a sports store or as a sports umpire/referee could be something you would enjoy. If youre really into music, then why not go for a job in a music shop? Network Talk to your friends to find out if there are any positions available where they work. Get the name of the manager and find out the best time to contact them, and whether you should email, phone or drop in. Make sure you mention your friends name when you make contact. Also talk to your parents and ask them if they know anyone who would be good to speak to. Explore your neighbourhood Take a walk to your local shops or shopping centre, as shops often put signs up in their windows advertising vacancies. Make sure youre dressed appropriately and br ing a few copies of your resume so if you do come across something of interest, youll be able to speak to the manager and give them your resume straight away. Speak to the right person Its important you speak to the person who makes the hiring decisions. Always ask for the manager as the first point of contact. If theyre not available, find out when would be a good time to come back or call. Be considerate about the time of day you drop in dont jupe up to a caf or shop during peak time. Also, dont interrupt a staff member if theyre talking to a customer politely wait your turn and then explain why you are there. Application forms Some organisations, like Coles, Woolworths or Big W, will expect you to fill out an application form. Have a look on their websites to see if this is something best done online or in person. If youre completing an application form in person, make sure you write neatly and that your application is free from spelling mistakes. Transportation You need to thin k about how youre going to get to work. Can you walk there or will you need to catch the bus or train? Theres no point finding a great part-time job but then realising that it will take you hours to get there Some final tips Dress neatly and make sure youre clean and tidy and be conservative, unless youre applying for a job in a funky clothing store. Speak clearly and be enthusiastic about why you want the job. Its also a good idea to check in on a monthly basis to see if any new positions have opened up. 10 Ways Nanotechnology Impacts Our Lives

10 Ways Nanotechnology Impacts Our Lives 10 Ways Nanotechnology Impacts Our Lives 10 Ways Nanotechnology Impacts Our LivesNanotechnology is a common word these days, but many of us dont realize the amazing impact it has on ur daily lives. According to the United States National Nanotechnology Initiative, nanotechnology is science, engineering, and technology conducted at the nanoscale, which is about 1 to 100 nanometers. One nanometer is a billionth of a meter, or 10-9 of a meter. For comparison, a sheet of newspaper is about 100,000 nanometers thick. Scientists are discovering that atoms and molecules behave differently at the nanoscale. It is also a rapidly expanding field. Scientists and engineers are having great success making materials at the nanoscale to take advantage of enhanced properties such as higher strength, lighter weight, increased electrical conductivity, and chemical reactivity compared to their larger-scale equivalents.Below are 10 ways nanotechnology impacts our l ives on a daily basis.1. Faster, smaller, and more powerful computers that consume far less power, with longer-lasting batteries. Circuits made from carbon nanotubes could be vital in maintaining the growth of computer power, allowing Moores Law to continue.2. Faster, more functional, and more accurate medical diagnostic equipment. Lab-on-a-chip technology enables point-of-care testing in real time, which speeds up delivery of medical care. Nanomaterial surfaces on implants improve wear and resist infection.3. Nanoparticles in pharmaceutical products improve their absorption within the body and make them easier to deliver, often through combination medical devices. Nanoparticles can also be used to deliver chemotherapy drugs to specific cells, such as cancer cells. The under-body panels on the new C7 Chevrolet Corvette are made of nanocomposite carbon. Image Tuner Tom / Wikimedia Commons4. Improved vehicle fuel efficiency and corrosion resistance by building vehicle parts from nanoco mposite materials that are lighter, stronger, and more chemically resistant than metal. Nanofilters remove nearly all airborne particles from the air before it reaches the combustion chamber, further improving gas mileage.5. Nanoparticles or nanofibers in fabrics can enhance stain resistance, water resistance, and flame resistance, without a significant increase in weight, thickness, or stiffness of the fabric. For example, nano-whiskers on pants make them resistant to water and stains.6. Water filters that are only 15-20 nanometers wide can remove nano-sized particles, including virtually all viruses and bacteria. These cost-efficient, portable water treatment systems are ideal for improving the quality of drinking water in emerging countries.7. Carbon nanotubes have a variety of commercial uses, including making sports equipment stronger and lighter weight. For example, a tennis racket made with carbon nanotubes bends less during impact, and increases the force and accuracy of the delivery. Nanoparticle-treated tennis balls can keep bouncing twice as long as standard tennis balls.8. Most sunscreens today are made from nanoparticles that effectively absorb light, including the more dangerous ultraviolet range. They also spread more easily over the skin. These same nanoparticles are also used in food packaging to reduce UV exposure and prolong shelf life.9. Many drink bottles are made from plastics containing nanoclays, which increase resistance to permeation by oxygen, carbon dioxide, and moisture. This helps retain carbonation and pressure and increases shelf life by several months.10. Thanks to nanotechnology, a huge variety of chemical sensors can be programmed to detect a particular chemical at amazingly low levels, for example, a single molecule out of billions. This capability is ideal for surveillance and security systems at labs, industrial sites, and airports. On the medical front, nanosensors can also be used to accurately identify particular cells or substances in the body.On the HorizonThese are just a few of the thousands of ways that nanotechnology impacts society. Important nanotechnology achievements seem to be announced almost daily. For example, researchers at George Washington University have discovered a way to draw carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and convert it into high-yield carbon nanofibers that can be used in manufacturing.Such nanofibers are used to make strong carbon composites, such as those used in the Boeing Dreamliner, as well as in high-end sports equipment, wind turbine blades, and a host of other products, says chemistry professor Stuart Licht, who lumineszenzdiode the research team. The process is powered by a hybrid system consisting of solar cells and a thermal energy collector that draws very little energy. Licht estimates that if the process was scaled up to cover a physical area less than 10 percent of the size of the Sahara Desert, within a decade it would reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphe re to pre-industrial levels. When asked about nanotechnologys greatest potential for improving the state of the world, Markus Antonietti, director of Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces at Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology, responded it was the purification of air and water. The technology already exists to fix the atmosphere, he says. But there also needs to be a focus on education and getting information to the public at large. Most people still dont know about these technologies. The best part is that all of this could happen immediately, if we simply spread the information in an understandable way. People dont read science journals, so they dont even know that all of this is possible.Mark Crawford is an independent writer.Learn how integration of engineering, science and nanotechnology is addressing fundamental problems in biology and medicine at ASMEs NEMB Conference. For Further DiscussionScientists are making innovative new materials at the nanoscale to take advantage of their enhanced properties such as higher strength, lighter weight, electrical conductivity, and chemical reactivity.

7 tips to find the right industry, position for your next career move

7 tips to find the right industry, position for your next career move 7 tips to find the right industry, position for your next career move Don’t have an accidental life or career. Often more planning goes into a summer vacation than a 40-year career or 90-year life. Spend purposeful time creating an actionable plan for your next career move and you can trade the treadmill to nowhere for fulfillment. 1. Know Your Values   If you are considering making a career change and aren’t sure where to start, start with what you know best. Nobody knows you better than YOU.  Recommit to your values â€" your principles or standards on what is so important such that living these values makes you more fulfilled than anything else.   Values are principles or standards of behavior â€" your judgment on what matters most in life. Examples of values include: Balance, Autonomy, Freedom. Creativity, Listening, Humor, Family etc. Write down your values. 2. List Your Transferable Skills Transferable skills fall into the three categories: 1) Communication â€" speaking effectively, writing concisely, customer service, selling, building consensus, etc.; 2) Organization of Information â€" forecasting and predicting, creating ideas, setting goals, creating solutions, etc.; 3) Operating of Systems and Equipment â€" install software, engineer systems, Coordinate equipment interfaces, building things, etc.  Make a list of these skills. Match the prospective job description to these skills and highlight measurable accomplishments in these skill areas in your cover letters and resumes. Get a free e-book that shows you how to define your values, strengths and transferable skills here â€"  Eight Tips to Find the Right Industry and Position for Your Next Career Move  here. 3.  Define Your Leadership Signature Strengths Free online assessments can help guide you to discover aspects of your personality, character, emotional intelligence, learning style and preferences to help you make an informed career decision â€" especially one that involves changing industries or roles. If you tend toward being strategic and creative you won’t enjoy a more task-specific role and vice versa. On a more finite level if you are more results and analytical you will want to build awareness of noticing emotions in your colleagues thus increasing compassion. These tools help you build your self-awareness, therefore, elevating your emotional intelligence. 4. Discover Your Future Pull Your ‘future pull’ is not your next job but a career position that calls out to you. You feel compelled to do this work because it matters. The issues you address in this role need to be tackled by you because it is purposeful to you. You are the best person ever suited to do this work because of your leadership signature.     Not doing it would leave you unfulfilled. Answer the following question: What do I want to be said at my retirement dinner by 1) a friend, 2) a work colleague and.3) my family? 5.  Start a ‘Company Watch List’   Create a list  of organizations within your community or virtually that have opportunities for you. Look for lists of the largest employers in your city, as well as “best places to work” awards, and awards from young professionals organizations. Don’t forget to include surrounding communities in your keyword search; there might be a great employer just one town over who doesn’t show up when you do your original search.   Networking is key to finding a job- and when you’re moving to a new community, the more people you can get to know, the better. Research Service Clubs and Meetup Groups and note which companies have lots of members. 6. Start a ‘Network List’ Let your friends, family and even general acquaintances know about your search. See if they “know anyone who knows anyone” who might be able to give you some leads on potential employment. Members of the groups you have researched tend to be community leaders and often have the inside scoop on who’s hiring, even if the posting isn’t public. By learning the names and associations of these individuals, you’ll have a better understanding of who you should get to know. Add these contacts to a “Network List” which will function much like your Watch List.   Do a search on LinkedIn to see if any of your connections have relationships in the companies on your Watch List. Ask for a casual introduction. Don’t make it a sales pitch or pressure them for career leads; just let them know you’re researching new opportunities and want to meet new people during the transition. Don’t randomly ask people to connect. That will turn people away. 7. Try It On   Take your “Watch” and “Network” lists and create a “Top Five List” of people and companies you know of that fit each Industry. Include social networks when doing this such as LinkedIn. Search company names and notice who is already working in those companies that you know.     Call or set up a meeting with people you know from these companies. Ask them if they can share insight into the culture of the company. Don’t ask them to recommend you. Allow them to suggest that to you based on your interest in THEM and THEIR COMPANY.   Reach out to people on LinkedIn with a message such as this:     Hi Jason. I see that you are working for (XWZ Company) and I wonder if you might share a little about the culture of the company. I am researching companies that align with my personal values and strengths. I see that (mention something you noted from their website or organizational values) and that very much interests me because I have experience doing that.       Join a MeetUp Group in the industry that interests you. Develop relationships. Ask if you can job shadow for a day. Get to know leaders. Volunteer there.     Search opportunities on online jobs boards such as Indeed, ZipRecruiter, and Idealist  or set up a ‘daily agent’ to notify you when a position comes available with your keywords.     Volunteer in a line of work that interests you for a non-profit organization. They are always seeking volunteers. This is a great place to try out a new skill.   Offer to freelance for a company you are interested in working for so that they may ‘try you on’ before they buy.   Update each resume and cover letter for each position you seek. Position your key strengths and transferable skills noted in this report. Perfectly Cast

Perfectly Cast Perfectly Cast Perfectly Cast Jason Troutner knows casts. Long before he signed on as chief technology officer of Cast21, Troutner endured multiple surgeries and sports injuries that required him to spend about three years of his life wrapped up in more than 50 fiberglass casts. He suffered through itching, odors, and muscle atrophyand moped around when he couldnt swim with his pals. Troutner, together with biomedical design engineer Ashley Moy and electrical engineer Justin Brooks, founded Cast21 to reduce the discomforts faced by millions of people who end up in some type of cast every year. Materials used in fiberglass casts arent waterproof; they absorb and trap water. Those are the two main problems we set out to solve, said Troutner, who met Moy and Brooks during an engineering design class at the University of Illinois, where they partnered on the project. Fiberglass casts are poorly engineered and not patient friendly. For an engineer, it seems like such a lazy and impractical solution, he says. The new cast can be used along with electrical stimulation therapy to help reduce healing time. Image: Cast21 The fiberglass wrapping of modern casts is water resistant (unlike the old plaster ones), but wearers still cant allow the cotton padding underneath to get wet. To fix that problem, the team developed a cast made from interconnected silicone tubes that harden after theyre injected with resin. The casts lattice design immobilizes the bone, yet leaves most of the skin exposed, giving it room to breathe. The gaps also allow room for electrical stimulation electrodes, which can prevent muscle atrophy and help fractures heal. Other groups have developed prototypes of customizable casts that can manufactured using 3D printers. But many of the orthopedic surgeons and physicians the Cast21 team spoke with during its market research said they were unwilling to invest in the resources needed to support a 3D printing infrastructure in their offices. From a business standpoint, its impractical, Troutner said, adding that the process would alsotake too much time with todays 3D printers, given that each cast has to be customized to fit individual limbs. Instead, Cast21 developed a one-size-fits-all approach for leg and arm casts. The cast starts off as a mesh sleeve made from a highly flexible silicone that conforms to the shape of the limb in much the same way a white foam fruit sleeve wraps around a small apple. A physician or nurse simply slips the Cast21 sleeve over the patients limb, properly positions the limb and cast, and injects the hollow tubes with a polyurethane resin. The resin hardens within 15 to 20 minutes to support the broken bone, yet the silicone material still provides cushion against the skin. The cast is about 70 percent lighter than a fiberglass cast, which usually takes between 25 and 30 minutes to harden, longer if the patient will bewalking on it. A 3D rendering of the new cast. Image: Cast21 To come up with initial ideas for a strong yet flexible design, Troutner used an incredibly sophisticated process: he typed cool mechanical structures into Google. He came across basketball and fruit nets, the Eiffel Tower, finger traps, and a variety of bridges. His friend, an aerospace engineer who specializes in finite element optimization, then created an optimization program to match the best design with the ideal materials. As a mechanical engineer, I had to find out how the segments would play together to provide the strongest support, Troutner said. I had to make sure the structure would stand up to any force on the arm or leg. Cast21 has filed for a provisional application patent and is waiting for U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval. It is also working with medical device accelerator ZeroTo510 in Memphis, TN, to build a sales and marketing structure. Meanwhile, Troutner is tweaking the silicone and resin formulas for an even stronger, more comfortable cast. Unfortunately, the team has yet to discover a good way for people to sign it. Learn the best practices of bringing your research to market and creating marketable solutions at ASMEs COMS 2016 For Further Discussion Fiberglass casts are poorly engineered and not patient friendly. For an engineer, it seems like such a lazy and impractical solution.Jason Troutner, Cast21

This is what lack of sleep is doing to your ability to focus

This is what lack of sleep is doing to your ability to focus This is what lack of sleep is doing to your ability to focus We can blame lack of sleep for pretty much anything going wrong in our lives. Unhealthiness, being passive aggressive, mismatching our shoes, etc.And a new study finds it is really hurting your ability to not be distracted at work. The study, published in the  Journal of Experimental Psychology, looked at  how well subjects could complete a task  accurately after being distracted mid-way through the assignment in a lab at night. After the task was completed, half of the subjects went home to sleep, but the other half had to stay and remain awake. It’s harder to come back from distractionsThe results? Of those who stayed awake 15%  were “unable or unwilling to achieve a modest level of accuracy that they were instructed to achieve and were able to achieve the evening before,” while this was only the case for 1% of the sleep group. Now being tired at work and seeing one Instagram alert pop up on your phone which then sends you down the rabbit hole for 10 minutes it was one thing, bu t this can lead to more serious issues. “If you look at mistakes and accidents in surgery, public transportation and even operating nuclear power plants, lack of sleep is one of the primary reasons for human error,” said study author Kimberly Fenn. “There are many people in critical professions who are sleep-deprived. Research has found that nearly one-quarter of the people with procedure-heavy jobs have fallen asleep on the job.”In other words, go to sleep!

When wives earn more than their husbands, they both lie about it

When wives earn more than their husbands, they both lie about it When wives earn more than their husbands, they both lie about it The question of who earns more in a relationship makes some couples so uncomfortable that they are willing to lie on the record about it. This is a finding that the  Census Bureau found when they reported discrepancies between the salaries that heterosexual couples put down on their Census Bureau surveys and the salaries they put on their IRS filings. If husbands earned less than their wives, the husbands exaggerated the numbers of how much they earned, saying they  earned 2.9% more than they actually did. If a wife earned more than her husband, she underreported her salary, saying she made 1.5% less than she did. But when husbands earned more than wives, suddenly, both couples were able to keep these numbers straight.Even as progress is being made for a joint couple’s earning power, psychologically, some cannot escape the feeling that they are violating a social norm when women earn more than men.  The Census research said that when these married couples “violate the norm that hu sbands outearn their wives, the survey respondents reporting the couples’ earnings appear to minimize the violation by inflating the earnings of the lower-earning husbands and deflating the earnings of the higher-earning wives.”When wives earn more, neither partner likes to admit itIncreasingly, the idea of men being the primary breadwinners is changing. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics,  about 38%  of wives earned more than their husbands in 2015. But society has not yet caught up to this fact. In 2017, writer Ashley Ford surveyed 130 Millennial women about their conflicted feelings around being the higher-earner in a relationship. Women said they felt internal and external pressure to be solely responsible for the couple’s financial needs.“It initially made me feel ashamed like I was settling or it meant that I wasn’t attractive enough, good enough. There was a lot of internalized misogyny about how attractive or sexy women should be with ‘successful’ men. I worried about what other people would say,” one anonymous woman breadwinner said. This pressure around gendered roles may explain the unseen pressure couples feel to lie on government forms. The Census lies show us that who earns what is not a neutral answer. Whether or not we like to openly admit it, we measure ourselves and our partners according to their monetary value. Salaries are intimately tied to our identities as top-performing employees and as good partners who are able to provide for our families. “Even seemingly objective, clearly measurable economic outcomes may suffer from measurement error due not just to gaps in respondents’ knowledge of the outcome but also to gaps between their beliefs or values,” the researchers concluded.

How Flextime and Telecommuting Benefit Workplaces

How Flextime and Telecommuting Benefit Workplaces How Flextime and Telecommuting Benefit Workplaces Nearly 4.3 million employees worked from home at least part-time in 2018, according to GlobalWorkplaceAnalytics. Thats an increase of 140% since 2005. Millions more work in positions that could easily lend themselves to flextime and telecommuting, at least a couple days a week. Experts have long predicted that the emergence of mobile technology would eventually have a major impact on the way people work, and that time has come. EMarketer indicates that adults spent more than three and a half hours a day on their mobile smartphones in 2018, even when they worked in brick-and-mortar workplaces, and its expected that theyll spend more time staring at their phones than at television screens in 2019. Thats a lot of texting, surfing the internet, and collaborating using mobile technology, both in the office and on the go. Smart employers have begun to offer a lot more flextime and telecommuting to keep up with these trends and employee preferences. The Business Atmosphere is Global Companies have started to expand globally. Teams are no longer always sitting in the same office, or even in the same state or country. They have to work outside normal work hours to accommodate team members in other time zones, and this demands more flexibility in scheduling. Traveling employees can take their work on the road with them to improve their productivity levels, and companies can safely outsource tasks to contractors in other regions. Telecommuting Appeals to Younger Workers Telecommuting and flextime appeal to the younger, more technologically savvy generation of workers. An employee benefits package that allows for flexible schedules and remote work options is a major boon if your company hopes to attract and recruit  the freshest young talent. Millennials now make up the single largest population of workers, just behind baby boomers who are retiring and leaving in droves. Theyre more inclined to work looser schedules that allow them to focus on work when they want to, and they prioritize their personal commitments the rest of the time. Its expected that 75% of the U.S. workforce will be made up of millennials by 2025, and they want more flexibility and versatility. The Value of Work/Life Balance More work/life balance is a new value in the workplace, with flextime and remote work leading the way. The Workplace Trends 2015 Workplace Flexibility Study revealed that while “67% of employers feel workers have work-life balance, 45% of employees disagree. Many employees are part of the sandwich generation- theyre taking care of ailing baby boomer parents while simultaneously raising their own children. Flexible schedule and telecommuting allow employees to make the most of their time without sacrificing their careers or personal lives. The good news is that companies are taking steps to provide employee benefits that honor greater flexibility and the option to work from home as necessary. The Workplace Trends study indicated that seven out of 10 HR managers have made flexible work benefits a priority, and 87% of organizations have experienced improved employee satisfaction. About 71% have seen an increase in productivity.
